Looking at new build homes in South Yorkshire? Here’s what life has to offer

Thinking about relocating to South Yorkshire, moving back after some time away, or simply deciding if you’ll put down roots here for the long term? We might be slightly biased, but after building homes across the area since 1933, we know there’s a lot to love.

South Yorkshire brings cities, towns, established villages, and open countryside surprisingly close together. You can keep work, shopping, restaurants, and entertainment within reach, while parks, walking routes, and the Peak District give you plenty of opportunities to get outdoors too.

So, if you’re exploring new homes in South Yorkshire, here are some of the highlights worth knowing about the place we’ve called home for generations.

About South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire sits within the Yorkshire and Humber region and is made up of four main local authority areas: Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, and Barnsley. Sheffield is its largest urban centre, complemented by the wider county, which stretches from busy city neighbourhoods to market towns, villages, farmland, and countryside.

The area's industrial heritage still forms an essential part of its identity. Coal mining shaped communities across the county, and Sheffield became internationally associated with steel, cutlery, and metalworking. Today, you can explore much of that history at places such as Kelham Island Museum and Elsecar Heritage Centre.

South Yorkshire also borders West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, and Derbyshire. That puts locations like Leeds, Huddersfield, Chesterfield, York, Lincoln, Nottingham, and the Peak District all close by, each offering spots to explore, things to do, and reasons to visit.

It’s got a bit of everything

One of the things we value most about South Yorkshire is the variety. Sheffield gives you a major city centre with theatres, shopping, restaurants, universities, music, sport, and employment, then places such as Barnsley, Doncaster, and Rotherham bring their own town centres, communities, and surrounding villages.

Move further out and the landscape changes again. You’ll find places such as Wentworth, Cawthorne, Elsecar, Penistone, and Bradfield, alongside reservoirs, parks, farmland, and countryside. The western edge of the county even extends into the Peak District National Park, Britain’s first national park, designated in 1951.

This variety gives people searching for new build homes in South Yorkshire plenty to consider, whether your priorities are commuting, raising a family, getting outdoors, staying local to a town centre, or simply having useful amenities nearby.

Getting around South Yorkshire and beyond

South Yorkshire's position makes it a convenient base if your life regularly takes you elsewhere in the country. Major roads and rail routes run through the region, while its location being not too far from the centre of England gives you options in almost every direction.

Head west and you’ll reach the Peak District before continuing towards Manchester and Liverpool. Travel north for Leeds, York, and destinations towards the North East; east for Lincoln, Hull, and the Yorkshire or Lincolnshire coasts; or south towards Nottingham, Leicester, and London. Plus Birmingham, Wales, and the South West are also accessible for journeys just that little bit longer.

If you’re someone looking at new homes for sale in South Yorkshire, its prime position means you can stay well connected to family, travel for work or study, and enjoy weekends away across the UK.

Travelling by car

The M1 is one of South Yorkshire's most important road connections, providing a direct north-south route towards Leeds in one direction and the East Midlands and London in the other. Other major roads provide links between Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, and surrounding counties.

In everyday life, that connectivity can be incredibly useful for commuting between towns, travelling between different workplaces, or regularly visiting family elsewhere. It also gives you a broad choice of destinations when the weekend arrives.

And if your idea of a day out involves walking boots, the Peak District sits immediately west of Sheffield. Its landscapes range from gritstone edges and moorland to limestone dales, villages, and reservoirs, with Sheffield commonly regarded as one of the gateways to the National Park.

Public transport

South Yorkshire also has an extensive network of trains, buses, and trams. Sheffield railway station has regular direct services to destinations including Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Liverpool, and London, combined with connections throughout the wider national rail network.

Local rail services connect communities across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, and Doncaster, while Sheffield and Rotherham also benefit from the Supertram network. For journeys combining driving and public transport, Travel South Yorkshire currently lists 32 Park and Ride sites across the county, with onward bus, tram, or rail services.

With several ways to get around, commuters, students, and families can travel into the main centres and beyond without having to rely on the car for every journey.

Some of our favourite places across South Yorkshire

We’ve worked in this part of the country for generations, so narrowing down our favourite places isn't easy. What we can say is that there's always somewhere different to go, from a quiet walk or a family day out to some local history or an afternoon in the city.

A few places worth adding to your list include:

  • For city days: Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Kelham Island Museum, the Millennium Gallery, the Crucible and Lyceum Theatres, Meadowhall, and Valley Centertainment.
  • For families: Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Cannon Hall Farm, Gulliver’s Valley Theme Park, Magna Science Adventure Centre, and the Tropical Butterfly House.
  • For the outdoors: Rother Valley Country Park, Endcliffe Park, Graves Park, and the countryside around the western edge of Sheffield.
  • For history and heritage: Wentworth Woodhouse, Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, Conisborough Castle, Elsecar Heritage Centre, and Cusworth Hall.
  • For sport and entertainment: Doncaster Racecourse, iceSheffield, football at Bramall Lane or Hillsborough, and much more.

Ultimately, you can experience very different weekends within the same county. Sheffield Botanical Gardens alone has 19 acres and more than 18 different gardens, and Barnsley's Cannon Hall area combines parkland, heritage, and one of the region's best-known family farm attractions.

We could definitely keep adding to this list, and that's part of why we've loved building here for so long – there’s so much for you to discover!

Thinking about a new home in South Yorkshire?

If you're planning a move and comparing new homes in South Yorkshire, we'd always recommend looking at the housebuilder as well as the house. Local knowledge can make a genuine difference when it comes to choosing sites, understanding communities, and creating homes that suit the people who will live there.

Redmile Homes began in Sheffield in 1933, and we've been building across South Yorkshire and neighbouring North Derbyshire ever since. Over the generations, we've built homes in communities including Gleadless, Stannington, Birdwell, Aston, Mosborough, Wales, and Thorpe Hesley, along with locations just over the Derbyshire border.

Our current development, Gongoozlers Walk, is one of them. Killamarsh is officially in North East Derbyshire, near the South Yorkshire border and within easy reach of Sheffield and Rotherham. If your search for new homes for sale in South Yorkshire can extend a few miles over the county line, we still have a small number of homes available for you to explore.
